July 2007 Lesson

Date:July 1, 2007

Beloved Students:

As we pass the mid-point of the year, 2007, we have much for which to express gratitude. Some of you have indeed come a long way in your commitment to serving the planet. I am truly grateful for every bit of effort each of you has invested in the future of Earth, and I celebrate with you our shared joy in this project.

As each of you in the U.S. approaches Independence Day, July 4th, I am hopeful that you are able to celebrate more than just the freedom of your nation from the control previously held by another nation. I would like you to consider this year a celebration that takes in literally the entire planet. In our Year of Service, part of the goal is to have all of you begin to think in greater global terms than you may have previously. Thus, we could dedicate July 4th this year to Earth’s independence from the captivity of samsara.

Of course, we are talking about planetary freedom here, but as you are probably realizing by now, all that outward freedom actually takes place within each of you. You have the wonderful privilege of practicing that freedom for the planet in your own little microcosm. What this means, of course, is that the planet cannot truly go free from samsara until a critical mass of individuals living on the planet do so.

As each of you aligns with the planetary process that is afoot, you truly do become a force for the enlightenment of the planet. While this is, indeed, a blessing for the planet, it is also a marvelous thing for you. Used well, the opportunities available in 2007 and 2008 should prove to be very exciting, and it is my hope that each of my students will avail him/herself to every possible opportunity as it arises. This means it would be a good idea to get up every morning and use your day to actually look for opportunities of transformation. They could be waiting your recognition at virtually every turn: in your connections and meetings with people, in your flurry of activities, in your “chance” experiences, as well as in your normal daily tasks and responsibilities. In other words, recognize each day as a package of energy filled with potential break-through points.

Have some way of reminding yourself every morning as you start your day that this very day could be the day of your enlightenment. Live each moment thoughtfully, staying mindful and open in your approach to literally every experience, no matter how mundane it may seem. For example, you could have a break-through in such a nonevent as watering or mowing the grass; or, you could see the true nature of everything while on a walk in the park. You could even see emptiness directly in a moment when your boss is having a “bad hair day,” and taking it out on you. Never overlook the most mundane of experiences to hold exquisite possibilities.

I hope, you are digesting well last month’s lesson on commitment, and I further hope you have already sharpened your own commitment to discover your enlightenment. If so, July will likely hold some very rich moments for you, and if you enter each moment with supreme bodhichitta, knowing such is your natural state, anyway, you will discover the potential for opening more and more to your enlightenment will be found in some of the most unexpected places.

In truth, attaining any kind of independence, either at the national level or at the personal level, requires solid expenditures of commitment. While this is usually easily understood at the national level, and while such used to be readily understood at the personal level, you may find you are in need of ongoing reminders for the personal level. Since national independence has, over the generations, usually been won through wars and political skirmishes of one ilk or another, most readily agree that to win a war, there must be a commitment to do so. Further, if one is literally in the thick of the battle, one understands that the commitment of which we speak must be at the 100% level. Such is not always the case, however, in the journey to realize enlightenment.

For many, there is the belief that enlightenment is something that kind of sneaks up on one gradually over lifetimes, and when the full realization hits home, it may even be an unexpected event. While anything is possible, of course, when dealing with the human psyche, it should be noted that the likelihood of realizing enlightenment in that manner is infinitesimally rare. In other words, don’t count on it turning out that way for you. Here I would like to quote from last month’s written lesson for emphasis:

"When it comes to attaining deep spiritual realization, commitment is foundational to the process. As you must surely know, realizing enlightenment is not the proverbial “accident waiting to happen.” This type of profound realization must be supported by commitment and purpose."

Like everything else worth attaining, enlightenment is surely worth your best and most noble efforts. This is the time to require yourself to set new standards in your movement toward your enlightenment. How much have you previously meditated? Call yourself to a higher standard and double your efforts. How much have you poured over perennial wisdom teachings to gain deeper understanding? Make some evaluation and double (or treble) your efforts. How much have you yearned for your enlightenment? Deepen that yearning by generating fields of devotion and reverence, so much so that your very being is alive with the rich vibrational sustenance these energies provide.

Commit to looking at the world through Buddha eyes – not just whenever it happens by chance, but by working your commitment to so see. Clearly, your commitment to your enlightenment is the vehicle for reaching it. Never under-estimate the power of strong commitment in attaining the goal, whatever the goal may be. A fellow by the name of W.H. Murray once said:

"The moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence, too, moves. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never other-wise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’ s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no one could have dreamed would have come."

To enhance and facilitate your commitment, give some thought to what it might mean to live your life after seeing emptiness directly. How will you behave? What sort of friends will you seek out? How would you spend your time and energy? Look at some of your idle pastime activities now, and see if they are befitting the enlightened you. Without judgment, make these important assessments, and determine those behaviors that demonstrate who you really are.

Hone in on your decision to make a real difference in this world, and then go make it. I am not speaking in platitudes here for I gain nothing by doing so. I sincerely hope that you can take seriously the potential for your cutting through the suffering you now experience, as well as that you are likely to face if nothing changes in your life. Give this matter serious thought, and consider yourself privileged to be able to under-stand these matters and act on them. Let the world see who you truly are, and live your life as if you believe it. It is time to stop hiding behind all those perceived limitations and practiced points of unworthiness. It is time to literally adopt a bigger picture for your personal reality.

The watchword for the month of July is “mindfulness.” Perhaps we should call it the password to gain access to your true nature. As you will see in our recorded lesson this month, it is time to “step up to the plate” – not to hit a ball, but to take your enlightenment seriously. Please believe me when I say that the more people who do so, the fewer potential traumatic experience for Earth. Of course, Earth’s traumas are your traumas, just as your enlightenment becomes Earth’s enlightenment.

Please join in the focus this month by listening often to Living Your Enlightenment, a talk I recorded just a few weeks ago. Call yourselves to your highest personal standards, and never cease giving thanks for the fact that you can realize your true nature. Whether or not you have seen the truth of this statement previously, determine to see it now. Not only see it, determine to create your daily life from the premise of this truth and while being filled with patience and joyful effort, let yourself touch deeply the wisdom that now seeks manifestation in your life!

Your loving teacher,

Djwhal Khul
